What is gender identity? • Defined as a subjective, but continuous and persistent sense of ourselves as masculine or feminine • Self-image of belief about one’s gender • Can be different than assigned biological sex
Nature or Nurture? NURTURE: - sex roles develop from experience - children are sexually “neutral” at birth - gender identity is not determined by and individual until they reach the age of two
Nature or Nurture? • NATURE: • Hormones in the womb affect degree of masculinity/femininity • Temperature in the womb affects the expression of genes • Full expression of sex-determining genes may vary
Nature or Nurture? • NATURE: • Gene on the Y chromosome named SYR determines the masculinity of a fetus • Partial failure of gene expression could result in homosexuality in males
Nature or Nurture? • NURTURE: • Children take examples from the same sex parent • Social pressures and need for acceptance can also influence gender identity • Society affects gender identity
