Addressing The 'Elephant in The Room' Education is the main portal to recognition and opportunity in America, and yet the educational systems presently operate with gross unfairness. Nationally, African-Americans and Hispanic- Americans graduate from high school at 2/3 the rate of European-Americans, enter college at 1/2 the rate, and graduate from college at 1/3 the rate. At each level, the tragic education gap is increased rather than effectually addressed. These troubling figures are far worse in New York, especially among men. There are a multitude of “causes”—both internal (attitudes, vision, motivation and discipline) and external (some biased guidance counselors and unfair resource distributions)—and precious few successes who are overcoming these multiple challenges.
Addressing The 'Elephant in The Room' The education “experts” are working to fix this persistent gap. But they mainly focus on plans for ‘improving’ schools, through adjusting class size, teachers’ pay, computer access and such like—none of which affect outcomes much. These “experts” miss the fact that the main agents of transformation in the communities are ministers and churches—and these have the greatest influence on the parents and children in their church and community. The education “experts” generally treat the churches and ministers as irrelevant. How sad and tragic their ignorance! The challenge of transformation of American education falls disproportionately on minority and inner-city youth and communities. But how does this problem develop when these same minority and inner-city youth are more likely to go to church and have the benefit of the strong spiritual leadership of a pastor? More importantly, how can the existing leadership of church and community rise to meet this most important civil rights issue?
A Godly Cure to the Crisis Achievement Center for Excellence (ACE) was founded in 2012 by Paul de Vries, PhD and other leaders of New York Divinity School in response to the tragic crisis that exists among African-American and Hispanic-American youth, despite huge increases in school reforms and budgets. ACE is devoted to the tried-and-true 3-pillar architecture of education, equipping and empowering (1) families, (2) churches and (3) schools. A Godly Cure to the Crisis Through churches and community centers, our desire is to provide multiple opportunities for children and youth—especially in language and mathematics—after school, Saturdays and summers, as frequently as possible, veritably surrounding children with words and reading, active thinking, communication, reflection and creativity. We also wish to work through churches and community centers to help parents embrace their primal/parental-teaching role for language and quantitative skills. In the Literacy3program, families and churches will use especially the Bible as the primary text for language skill development.
How will Literacy3Be Effective? • Build Self-esteem: Let children read to you...and praise them and their efforts. • Engage Language: Have children tell their own stories which you help them write out. Then, let them read their stories back to you. • Increase Awareness: Freely explore the library—let children choose books on their own, even those that are not school related! • Build Relationships: Spend time with children. Hugs and books go together.
Show hospitality to one another without grumbling. As each has received a gift, use it to serve one another, as good stewards of God's varied grace [1 Peter 4:9-10] We are calling churches... (a) to their roles as both centers in the communities and curators of the Word; and (b) to become proactive promoters of the precious literacy that engages every person in the Word.
You would be participating in... • Justice—Truly opening excellent educational opportunity for all—preparing all children early and well, empowering parents and churches to encourage youth to become all that the LORD created and redeemed them to be. • Accountability—Intentionally building up every human person; bringing to all of our communities and to our country the accountable leadership and help from present youth and children—through excellence, all becoming all they are created and redeemed to be. • Love—Thoroughly benefiting all children in a community with the transformative attitudes, allegiances, abilities and achievements--as benefiting your own children. • Presence—Honoring the LORD by empowering all of his children, all God’s images, to excel, that is to become entirely what he created and redeemed them to be.
You can help by... • Helping to plan and develop Literacy3resources and training manuals. • Volunteering as a tutor and teacher for young students. • Being a financial collaborator. and most importantly... • Earnestly praying for God's transforming work through the Holy Spirit.
After all, successful literacy has 3 parts: Without Bible literacy, reality is flat.
