  1. Direct Instruction What is it? Teaching strategy which is teacher centered and involves lots of information being transmitted to the students. Typically known as a lecture.

  2. Direct instruction is like a good speech: the teacher must catch students’ interest at the beginning, hold it by delivering pertinent organized information, involve listeners (overtly or covertly) and STOP before they reach saturation.

  3. Types of Direct Instruction • Explaining • Demonstration • Teaching a Concept • Giving Directions

  4. Considerations • Be well organized • Juggle direct instruction with other teaching strategies • Show enthusiasm, interest in the topic • Include lots of examples, illustrations, analogies, visuals • Make all your students feel personally spoken to

  5. Considerations • Good audibility • Secure attention • Emphasis on key points • Organized: advanced organizer or outline • Check for understanding? • Don’t read from notes

  6. Cautions • Do not overuse direct instruction • Make your direct instruction as interactive as possible • Students typically fade out of non-interactive lectures.
