  1. Myths Myths Surrounding Surrounding The The Skin Skin Problem Problem Of Of Melasma Melasma Melanin is the skin pigment which gives our skin its color. There can be a lot of reason which could account for either a lack or an excess of this pigment on our skin causing the skin problem we often refer to as skin pigmentation. Excess of this pigment can be because of environmental, hormonal or some genetic problem. This condition is called Melasma in medical terms. The opposite of this condition is vitiligo where instead of the excess; there is a lack of skin coloring pigment. Melasma and vitiligo, together make two of the most common skin problems that the dermatologists all over the world have to face. These skin problems are more common in the areas where the sun exposure and pollution factors are high. The industrial area of Visakhapatnam is an example of the areas where pigmentation is a cause of distress. This is the reason why for Melasma treatment in Vizag doctors are consulted from all over the country. Common myths related to Melasma There are many myths which seem to surround the problem of Melasma. Some of the most common ones are - Sunscreen is only for sunny days This is one wrong misconception which is the reason why pigmentation occurs in the first place. The harmful UV lights are around us, even when it is not sunny outside. Not applying sunscreen on days when you think it is not cloudy enough, leaves the skin exposed to damage. Acid compounds are the only solution They are one of the solutions but certainly not the only one. Peels and acid compounds do exfoliate the skin to make the condition better but there are many other clinical approved methods available as well which are much safer than the use of strong acidic compounds on the skin. The treatment is permanent As much as we would like to deny it, but it is not true. The treatment is temporary and the condition often recurs after a little while when the skin is exposed to the same condition whichcaused the problem in the first place. We often suggest our patients to follow certain guidelines after Melasma treatment. Vizag is a polluted area so it is better that you keep your skin protected, nourished and hydrated all the time.
