Basic Shot Transitions • Cut • Fade • Dissolve • Wipe
Cut A basic cut is when the scene moves from one shot to another immediately. When I click on this slide it will cut to the next.
Fade This transition is when the image fades away gradually. You can fade to black: often used to signal the end of a day. Or fade to white which is used when a softer effect is required. At the beginning of a dream sequence for example.
Dissolve A dissolve is where one image dissolves into another. This is used rarely in modern film making, but can be seen often in 50s and 60s films.
Wipes A wipe is when one image is wiped away to be replaced by another. Wipes can happen in a variety of directions. Wipes became popular in the 70s and 80s. They were used extensively in the original star wars movie.
