Outline • Introduction • Mission Requirements • Regular Class • Micro Class • Design Report • Oral Presentation • Flying Competition • Strategy for this year
Introduction • Real-life engineering exercise • Trade study • Written/oral communication skills • Design report: 25% • Oral presentation: 25% • Flight Competition: 50% (approximate) • Original design
Fort Worth Thunderbirds Radio Control Association Benbrook, Texas, Altitude 700 feet Avoid Lake of Death! Orbit Land Takeoff
Design Report • Explain thought processes, engineering philosophy that led to conclusions • Detail the methods, procedures, calculations • Airfoil selection, drag analysis, stability, power plant performance, etc. • Performance prediction: How much weight can your plane lift?
Oral Presentation • 15-minute design presentation • Judged on technical content and manner of presentation • Try to convince customer to purchase your design • What makes your design better than the competition?
Flying Competition • Technical inspection (requirements met?) • Wing planform area, cargo bay size, airworthiness, conformance to plans • Pilot must have AMA membership card • Time limit while on tarmac • 5 minutes to make a successful takeoff
Strategy for This Year • Design using Multi-Surface Aerodynamics Software • Build Prototype I by Dec. 1 • Build Prototype II by Jan. 15 • Build Prototype III by Feb. 15 • Build Prototype IV by Mar. 1 • Build Prototype V by Mar. 15 • Test, Test, Test until Contest • Win!
