What is a tropical climate? • It hasa non-arid climate • All twelve months have average temperatures of at least 18ºc • Between tropic of Cancer and tropic of Capricorn In addition, there are several subtropics: • Tropical rainforest climate (Monthly precipitation of at least 60mm) • Tropical monsoon climate (Has a driest month) • Tropical savanna climate (Has a pronounced dry season)

  5. Climate data (Malaysia) Has a tropical rainforest climate As Malaysia is near the equator, its monthly sunshine hours stay fairly consistent throughout the year.

  6. Climate Data (cont.) Additionally, as Malaysia doesn’t have distinct seasons, monthly mean temperatures stay mostly constant throughout the year.

  7. Climate Data (cont.) Due to monsoons from Oct to Jan and Mar to Apr, these months receive exceptionally high precipitation as compared to the other months.

  9. Interesting information Did you know? • Trees in a tropical climate often have no visible growth rings. This is due to the lack of extremes (summer and winter), which thus allows them to grow in a similar way all year round. Thus, the difference between dry and wet seasons is too subtle to make a distinct mark. • Some trees, however, do have growth rings. The “ringless” Miliusavelutina tree from Thailand actually has rings, just invisible to the naked eye.
