  2. Poe’s Early Life • Poe was born January 19th, 1809. • Poe had a brother Henry, and sister Rosalie . • Poe’s mother died when he was two years old. • The children were separated after their mothers death.

  3. Poe’s Teenage Years • Poe attended school in England for five years, then moved to America. • Poe attended one year of college at the university of Virginia 1827. • Poe was in debt, and dropped out of college. • Poe soon became a heavy drinker.

  4. Poe in the Army • Poe needed money and joined the army. • Poe was eighteen at the time. • He did well and became a sergeant major. • John Allan refused to send Poe money and Poe was dismissed.

  5. Poe as a Writer • Poe moved back to New York. • Poe had some of his poetry published. • Poe had no friends in New York. • Poe later became the editor of a newspaper. • He won a contest with his story “The Manuscript Found In a Bottle.”

  6. Poe’s Stories • The Haunted Palace. • The Gold Bug. • Ligeia. • The Murders in the Rue Morgue. • Tales of the Grotesque and Arabesque

  7. Poe Liked Gambling • Poe often gambled the little money that he had. • He went deeper in debt. • Lead to self destruction, ill health, and poverty.

  8. Poe’s Marriage • Poe married Virginia Clemm, his 13-year-old cousin in 1836. • She died a few years later. • He kept her body under his bed.

  9. Poe’s Final Days • Poe had many financial troubles. • He left New York and moved to Philadelphia. • Then moved to Richmond. • Joined a group and tried to stop drinking. • He renewed his romance with Sarah Royster Shelton.

  10. Poe’s Death • Poe was having troubles. • Lapsing in and out of consciousness. • He was taken to the hospital. • He could not explain what was happening to him • He later died in the hospital on Sunday, October 7th, 1849.
