Entry Task: Block #2 Sept 12-13 Write question down! Entry task Question: Provide some thoughts as to how a chemistry class should be managed. You have 5 minutes!
Agenda Discuss Math/Chem test results Discuss – Quickly- the class routine Pass out and discuss Lab safety
I Can… -Demonstrate proper lab safety techniques -List what needs to be done prior to lab and the penalties of improper lab behavior.
Pre Lab Assignment Pre-Lab Assignments- They are part of the lab handout that has questions at the beginning of the lab for you to answer. They must be completed and correctly answered BEFORE you are admitted into the lab area
NO Pre Lab Assignment This means- ALMOST DONE Sorta finished “Hang-on Mayhan- I’m almost done” Incomplete in ANY WAY Looks like you did it in 5 minutes Most of the answers are incorrect
NO Pre Lab Assignment No Pre-lab = Not prepared Not prepared = Not Safe Not Safe = No Lab Entry No Lab Entry = Lab on your own Within 1 week of lab or it’s a ZERO!! With a 30% deduction in lab grade
Lab Activities Labs are designed to do hands-on practice of concepts being taught in class. To ensure that the labs are done safely and that the student has a clue to what the lab is about, they are to do a pre-lab assignment PRIOR to the lab performance.
Lab Activities MY responsibility as a chemistry teacher: Provide a safe lab environment Ensure that EVERYONE knows the chemicals being used in the lab as well as its dangers. Provide steps and procedures to take should something go wrong.
BEFORE LAB: 1. These MUST be done: 1. Sign off pre-lab assignment 2. Stow backpacks/chairs, 3. Goggle on 4. Hair up/clothing secure.
Laboratory Safety Contract 2. Come to lab prepared, having completed the pre-lab assignment. I understand that the consequence for choosing not to finish the pre-lab is exclusion from the lab activity.
3. Behave responsibility at all times. Unauthorized experiments, horseplay, practical jokes, and pranks are forbidden. If irresponsible, I will be My parents/guardians will be notified and charged for any damages as a result from my behavior. If irresponsible, I will be excluded from the lab, thus earning a “0” on the lesson. =
I will not wander around the room, distract my classmates, AND not paying attention to YOUR experiment. 4. Work at my assigned lab station. If I choose to do so, I will lose 10 points off my Lab grade.
5. Keep aisles clear of packs and other obstructions. Place backpacks ON TOP of desks and push in chairs!!
6. Tie long hair back. Do not wearing shorts, open-toed sandals, and/or loose-fitting clothes on labdays. This is considered NOT prepared- no lab entry!
7. Wearing safety goggles at ALL times when in the lab area. Take them off- You will get a zero for lab
8. Food, beverages (including water) and make-up are NOT allowed in chemistry classrooms. This is a government regulation.
9. DO NOT sit on laboratory tables- not for sitting! A deduction of 5 points for doing so.
10. Report accidents, injuries, or incorrect and dangerous procedures to my teacher at once.
What is wrong with this scenario? 13. I will be an active participant and pay attention- in lab. NOT Paying attention NOT Paying attention 11. If I do nothing or not pay attention, I will be asked to sit down and receive a “zero” for the activity.
12. If I need help with the lab equipment, I will ask for assistance. But If I ask questions that relate to “what to do” during the lab I will be docked 5 points from my lab grade. 50 grams of sodium hydroxide? 30 grams of sodium hydroxide? USE YOUR PRE-LAB… That’s what its for!!!!!!!
14. Put wastes in the proper containers: broken glass, paper towels, chemicals, etc. do not go down the sink
14. Have good “lab keeping” practices, readying my station and materials for the next class. There will be a 5 point penalty for dirty sink, table and materials FOR EVERYONE AT THAT STATION.
15. Know the location of and specific use for, the: On podium and in back Fire extinguisher______________ In back next to fire extinguisher First aid kit___________________ At end of podium AND by shower Eyewash_____________________ In back next to fire extinguisher Fire blanket___________________
Student/Parent support:I have read the Lab Safety contract.. I will observe the behavior expectations described in the contract in order to create a safe and efficient laboratory environment. Student Name:_________________________Signature:______________________________Date_______ (Please print) Parent/Guardian Signature_____________________________________________________________Date_______ Kathleen Mayhan 9/12 Kathleen Mayhan Get this signed by parent/guardian Due MONDAY- for 10 points credit NO CONTRACT NO LAB ENTRY!!
Self Quiz Lab Safety What will happen if your messing around in the lab area? You’ll be asked to go to office and receive a zero on the lab activity What 4 tasks should be done PRIOR to entering the lab area? These MUST be done: 1. Sign off pre-lab assignment 2. Stow backpacks/chairs, 3. Goggle on 4. Hair up/clothing secure. KNOW THIS!!!
Name three ways of losing 5 points in the lab? Sitting on lab tables Asking information in lab that you should be able to get from pre-lab. Leaving the lab area dirty- sink, table or materials Why is it important to stay in your lab grouped area? Wondering around can be a distraction and YOU should be busy in lab. There is a 10 point deduction if violated.
If there something you want to do “extra” that is NOT part of the lab experiment, are you allowed to? NO!!, you could get kicked out of lab. If you catch on fire, what should you do? Stay Calm, smother flame by dropping and rolling on the ground. Someone get fire blanket, smother student and call 911
