Young Adolf • Born in Austria-Hungary • 4th of 6 children • Family would move to Bavaria, where Hitler would identify as his home • His mother died when he was fairly young • Life goal was to become a painter
WWI • Volunteered to the army when WWI started • Was a runner & spent lots of time at the front • Received multiple awards for bravery from his service • Was never promoted because he “appeared to lack leadership potential” • Was partially blinded by gas, and was in a hospital when WWI ended
Joining the Nazis • After the War Hitler took a government job which made him responsible for keeping track of potentially “radicle” political groups. • One of these groups was the early Nazi party • Hitler agreed with many of the ideals of the party, joined, and attempted to make them successful • Hitler was member 555, but 500 was added to every card to make the party look bigger than it was.
Rise of the Nazis • Hitler took a keen interest in the success of the party. • In 1923 Hitler would attempt to overthrow the government in what was known as the “Beer Hall Putsch” • The coup failed, but Hitler used his trial as a platform to spread Nazi ideas. • He had a sympathetic judge who gave him 5 years in prison, he only served one • While in jail he wrote his book Mein Kampf
Ideals of the Nazis • Many Germans felt as though the Treaty of Versailles had been especially cruel and unfair to the Germans • Many Germans believed that their own government had quit on them • A group that tended to take more blame then others were Jews, as anti-Semitism had a long history in Europe.
After Jail • After Hitler got out of jail he made a vow: if he gained control of Germany it would be 100% legal (He kept this promise) • He would go about legally trying to take control of Germany • However, despite his party’s platform the Nazi party had little success… until the Depression
In 1932 Hitler was be made Chancellor of Germany • 4 weeks later: The Reichstag building was set on fire, and the German President placed the country under a sort of military control. • The Communists were blamed for the fire, and wide scale arrests took place • The 1933 Election was held
After 1933 • After 1933 Hitler (Nazis) gained coalition control of the Reichstag when the Catholic Center Party agreed to work with the Nazis • The Reichstag legally voted to approve the Enabling Act, which gave the Chancellor of Germany the Effective powers of the Reichstag • Hitler would immediately outlaw all political parties other than the Nazis, and start to consolidate his power. • The only person who could stop Hitler, President Hindenburg, died in 1934
