What are we trying to achieve? • Respond to the ‘Recovery’ agenda of service users and carers nationally, regionally and locally • Reduce unnecessary inpatient admissions and stays • Meet the changing needs of our local population • Ensure equity of services across the county • Make better use of our buildings and facilities
Older Adult Inpatient Care Separate service users with organic and functional illness Ensure we meet the need for privacy and dignity Make efficient use of capacity

Which can give us a problem when...... functional organic organic functional functional organic organic functional functional organic functional functional
Older Adult inpatient services - Summary Develop flexible inpatient areas Designated functional and organic capacity within each unit Designed to meet privacy and dignity needs The overall number of beds designed in line with capacity modelling forecasts More efficient use of capacity both short and long term
Adult Acute services Range of needs which sometimes conflict Need for better assessment at point of admission Need to keep inpatient stays as short as possible and for those who really need them Need to provide alternatives to admission Need to ensure meaningful interventions
Adult Acute services - Summary Adopt a single facility to admit patients and complete an assessment The existing facilities will continue to provide a treatment service Some patients would be diverted from admission to alternative crisis beds The number of beds will be based upon capacity modelling work currently being undertaken
Community Mental Health Services Shift in focus - from maintenance to recovery Understand varying length of stay with CMHTs Shift in focus - being clear who our service users are Greater clarity around staff roles
Community services - summary Service users will have had a planned assessment and agreed treatment plan with defined goals Some patients would be discharged and some would transfer to Primary Care CMHTs will have broader patches with different skill mixes and specialist team members where appropriate Teams may be based in fewer facilities but would continue to deliver services across a wide base
Primary care mental health services - summary • Development of IAPT (improving access to psychological therapies) model through negotiation with commissioners • Close working with CMHT project to manage shift in work
Learning Disability services - summary • Work currently being undertaken looking at needs of people with learning disability and mental illness • This will be taken into account in future developments Substance Misuse services - summary • National move to from harm reduction to recovery • Need to improve integration between service providers
How will things look in the future ? • Service users will be in hospital less • The relationship between different services will be clearer • There will be greater clarity about what services can achieve • There will be more options for service users • Facilities will be more suitable • Services will be more efficient
Our next steps We are asking for the views of past, present and potential service users and carers We have arranged meetings with local service user and carer organisations We will have service user and carer input to the development of detailed proposals
Conclusion • Big agenda but an exciting opportunity to improve the way we are able to deliver services • Views sought from a range of groups including : • Our Service User and Carer Advisory Group (7th May) • Our Community Forum (12th May) • The Worcestershire LINK (18th May) • Mental Health Link Network (28th May) • Our Partnership Forum (3rd June) • Our FT members (29th June)
