Historical overview • -A huge number of immigrants follow each other in rapid succession • -300 families composed of 1424 individuals. Nationality of Families: 244 German, 16 Irish, 11 American, 13 Hungarian, 6 Polish, 4 Russian, 2 Bohemian, 1 English, 1 Dutch, and 2 Chinese • - Between 1881 and 1910, 1,562,000 Jewish emigrants arrived in America, most of them settling on the Lower East Side • - Poor immigrants who came to New York City during the mid-1800s into the early 1900s usually lived in the tenement district amongst crime, filth, and disease
