About 80% of all plants are angiosperms (flowering plants). • Flowering plants are efficient food makers, tough, fast growing, and good at producing offspring. • Flowers are the reproductive parts of the plant
Complete Flowers • Have all 4 main parts • Petals – brightly colored outer part of the flower • Sepal cover and protect the flower when it is a bud • Stamen – male part of the flower • Pistil – female part of the flower
Male flower parts • Stamen – made of a filament and anther • Filament is the long, thin stalk portion • Anther is the top of the filament which produces the pollen
Female Flower Parts • The pistil is made of the stigma, style, and ovary. • Stigma is the opening at the top of the pistil. • The style is the long tube-like structure that leads to the ovary. • The ovary contains the egg cells. Fertilization occurs here.
Incomplete Flowers • An incomplete flower is missing one or more of the four main parts.
Perfect vs Imperfect Flowers • Perfect flowers have both stamen and pistil (male and female parts).
