C’est combien, s’il vous plaît? • How much is it, please?
Combien coûte(nt) . . . ? • How much is (are) . . .? • Use the il / elle form (coûte) when you want to know the price of a singular item. • Use the ils / elles form (coûtent) when you want to know the prices of more than one item.
Combien en voulez-vous? • How many / much do you want? • Here, the en means “of it” or “of them.” • Remember, en almost always goes before the verb!
Je voudrais une livre d(e) ___. • I would like a pound of ___. • You could substitute un kilo for une livre if you wanted a “kilogram” of something.
Je vais en prendre #. • I’ll take # of them. • You could leave out the en and actually name the item you want: • Je vais prendre trois bananes.
