Types of interviews • Interview for writing • Ex- Newspapers, historical documentation • Interview for research • Ex- police work, university & scientific studies • Interview in the workplace • Ex- human resources, exit interview, appraisal interview • Friendly interview • Dating, friends, counseling session

  3. Before you interview • Research topics to develop appropriate questions • Ex- before interviewing World War II veterans read up on different battles. • Ex- before interviewing someone to be hired read over their resume and contact sources

Acing the Interview The Basics • Arrive early, NEVER arrive late for an interview • Dress and act professionally • Bring an extra copy of your resume to the interview • Go alone • Know where you are going • Smile • Greet secretary and interviewer warmly • Use a firm handshake and direct eye contact • Research the company or business you are applying with • Ask questions!!!!

  6. Screening • Used to verify information on a resume • Assesses how well your personality and skills fit with the company and organization • Could be the first in a sequence of interviews Ex. Phone Interview, Group Interview

  7. In-Depth • Gives employers a chance to get to know you better • More intense than a screening interview • Explores your qualifications in more detail Ex. One-on-One Interview , dinner interview, or panel interview

  8. Performance • Gives the candidate a chance to show how he/she would deal with situations potentially encountered on the job. Ex. Complete a task, give a presentation, role play
