Introduction • Rhea was born from Uranausand Gaea. • Rhea was the Queen 0f the Gods and the goddess of the earth. • Rhea is from Greek mythology.
Background • Rhea was married to Cronus. She was the mother of the gods. She had six children with Cronus. Her children were Hestia, Hades, Demeter, Poseidon, Hera and Zeus.
Claim to Fame • Rhea is most famous for saving her son Zeus from Cronus. Cronus’s prophecy said that he would be overthrown by one of his children so to prevent that from happening, he ate each of his children as they were born. When Zeus was born, Rhea gave Cronus a rock to trick him into thinking that he was eating Zeus. She hid Zeus in Crete. In Crete, the Curetes would protect Zeus and they would bang their spears and shields together to cover up his cries.
Downfall • According to Orphic myth, after Zeus was born, Rhea changed her name to Demeter.
Tales • Rhea was in the epic poem Argonauticawritten by Apollonius of Rhodes.
