What is the Victorian Historical Period Like? • The Victorian Period is defined as one of peace • They were becoming more economically sound, fair politically and economically, and focused on their sense of propriety • Population increased as a result of the Industrial Revolution because people were living better and could sustain the growth, more environmentally aware, and embraced the value of the individual –better medical care
Unfortunately . . . • Irish Potato Famine- forced emigration • Slums were a result of the over population and the poor • Prostitution • Child Labor
Consequence Literarily • Authors continued to comment on these atrocities through literature
Positive innovations • Price of food dropped • Diet improved- meat, fruit, and vegetables became more readily available • Factories and railroads made postage, newspapers, clothing, furniture, travel, and other goods and services more available • First Reform Act: More people could vote • Reform Act: Even more people could vote • Organized Political Action by women (although women suffrage doesn’t happen until 1928) • Factory Acts limited child labor/reduced the work day to ten hours
What is Victorian Literature? • The literature written during the Reign of Queen Victoria • The Victorian Period embraced the novel and developed it into what we know of today • They wrote very long descriptive wordy novels about the lives of fictional people • Still enjoyed irony and satire

Who was Jane Austen? • She lived with her sister and five brothers in Hampshire, England • Never married • Lacked formal schooling • Family was into music, playwriting, and letter writing –huge vocabulary • Completed “Pride and Prejudice” when she was 21 but it was denied publication • It was later published and received remarkable accolades
Pride and prejudice • You will be reading an excerpt from the novel • Then you will be required to write a five paragraph, three point definition essay • It will be typed, in MLA format, and PRINTED • It will be ready to be passed in at the beginning of class on Monday • No flash drives, emailed papers, or late papers will be accepted
