Objectives • Present AMP installation in Bldg 3001. • Fully understand needs and expectations. • Present safety features and procedures. • Establish safety requirements.
Contract Requirements • Install one AMP in Bldg 3001 to support KC-135 maintenance. • Provide user manual and training on safe operation & maintenance of AMP. • Under warranty for 12 months. • USTAE is the AMP vendor. • Expected completion date: 31 July 07.
AMP Travel Path • Dashed line represents AMP travel around aircraft in Dock 1 with horizontal stabilizer removed.
Maintenance Activities & Requirements • Access to wings, engines, fuselage and horizontal stabilizer. • Removal & installation of horizontal stabilizer? • Removal & installation of vertical stabilizer? • Removable handrails or gates? • Move personnel from platform to aircraft and back? • Use AMP as a hoist? • Interface with special handling gear like a sling?
System Safety Analysis • Formal analysis performed by Jacobs last year. • Identified and assessed hazards. • Developed countermeasures. • Followed: Mil-Std-882, AFOSH 91-501, OSHA-29 CFR, ANSI A10.28, ANSI C2, NESC, NFPA 70, NEC • Control system safety analysis performed by USTAE via Genesis / Rockwell who owns Allen-Bradley.
Safety Checklist Items • Control System - Failsafe • PTO switch on radio control unit • Safe-Stop button • Limit movement within safe envelope via software • Dual processors • Dual encoders • Double brakes – engage with power loss • Cable tension limits via sensors & software • Collision Avoidance • Power-on beacon • Contact sensor • Two-way radios • Spotter on floor
Safety Checklist Items (continued) • Safe escape and rescue • Controlled descent device • Secondary Radio Control Unit on the floor • Fall protection • Handrails • Personal Fall Arrest System (PFAS) • Anti-slip surface on platform floor • Fire extinguisher • AMP wiring complies with codes • Load tests – 3 times rated load • Warning labels
Safety Procedures • User manual – operations & maintenance • Training and certification of operators • Use of primary and secondary radio control units • Override by secondary unit – keep in secure area • Role of Spotter. • Use of control descent device • Use of PFAS
