  2. What is Osteoarthritis? • Most common joint disorder • Breakdown of a joints cartilage • Chronic disease • Effects 151 million people worldwide

  3. Mechanism • Caused by “wear and tear” of joints • Common in old grandma’s hands but effects all joints • Comes with old age No cartilage= osteoarthritis Cartilage left in knee

  4. Treatment • Strengthening muscles around the affected joint helps relieve pain • Weight loss takes pressure off of joints • Over-the-counter medications can relieve pain INCREASE STRENGTH!

  5. Financial issues • In 2005, direct costs totaled 4,730 dollars a year for Osteoarthritis patients. • Osteoarthritis costs the U.S. economy nearly 128 billion dollars a year in direct and indirect cost.

  6. Emotional Burden • Over 40% of patients surveyed said OA has had a negative impact on their daily life • Over 75% said OA limits their ability to perform daily activities • Over 75% said OA has had a negative impact on their physical health
