  4. Curtiss P-40 Warhawk Airplane The pilots of the 332nd Fighter Group painted the tails of their P-51's red, thus their nickname "Red Tails". Their reputation for protecting bombers would slowly grow and they would affectionately be called Red-Tail Angels.
