What do great students do? Success strategies at PMMS
Great Students: • come to class each day • make an effort • take responsibility • succeed on the CRCT . . . Let’s see what that means …
Prepare • Great students: • have sharp pencils, erasers, paper and all materials for class • do their work and turn it in on time • review study guides before tests and quizzes • keep an organized notebook
Prepare • Not a good idea: • always bumming stuff from classmates • leaving your books at home or locker • wandering the room to sharpen pencils • not reviewing before a test or quiz • not turning in work on time • using the “stuff it in” technique
Responsible • Great students: • know it is up to them to succeed • dress for success • practice “work before play” • know they can control their behavior
Responsible • Not a good idea: • blaming others or the teacher • loitering where you don’t belong • being late to class • being dishonest • “losing” your work • ignoring missing work when absent
Respect • Great students: • feel personal pride • look out for others • dress for success • treat teachers and school staff with respect • are polite
Respect • Not a good idea: • bullying other students • teasing or excluding others • taking things that aren’t yours • showing poor personal hygiene • challenging a teacher’s request • arguing, shouting, and fighting
Perform • Great students: • do their best • make an effort • ask questions • offer help • follow instructions
Perform • Not a good idea: • make excuses • turn in “whatever” • not doing warm-ups or classwork • “borrowing” answers from others • not asking for help • refusing to try
Permission • Great students • ask permission to speak, sharpen pencils or leave their seat • use their AGENDA for hall passes and keep it in intact all year • ask before entering another classroom
Permission • Not a good idea: • talking when the teacher is talking • having side conversations • shouting across the room • being loud at lunch or in the hall • wandering the room to sharpen pencils or throw out trash • being where you shouldn’t be
What if … ? • … I don’t know where to go? • … I can’t get into my locker? • … I am being bullied? • … I don’t understand? • … I am absent? • … I need help?
How do I … ? • … know if I am in the right class? • … get help before tests? • … check my grades? • … keep from getting citations? • … avoid office referrals? • … find out about missing work? • … become a great student?
