  1. My name is Steve Goodman. I will be teaching English Language Arts to 6th, 7th, 8th grade ESL students. I have 14 years teaching experience and have taught both Middle School and High School. What is ESL? • ESL stands for: • English • Second • Language • ESL is a service the school offers to those kids who speak another language other then English in their homes. • Using the Home Language Survey, parents indicate the home language when enrolling their children for school. on their • The ESL class is the English/Language Arts class of record.

ESL = English Class for non-English Speakers • There are 3 levels of ESL: • Beginning –new to the country or little English • Intermediate-know some English • Advanced-almost ready for ELA Once the student is registered in the school, he/she is tested by the school counselor to determine the correct level of English language skill.

  4. Who is in your child’s class: • Students will be placed in class according to their GRADE level. • Students will be learning appropriate grade level curriculum.

What are we doing in ESL? • Primary focus will be in four domains: Reading-novels, short stories, poetry, non-fiction Writing-narratives, expository essays, creative writing, journaling Listening-understanding English academically and socially Speaking-pronunciation and communication • How are these skills accomplished? to name just a few of the skill sets: vocabulary study, reading in and out of class, writing in class, research projects, presentations, conversation at home

  6. Grading • Each three week period: 1 summative (major) grade minimum- 50% 2 formative (daily) grades minimum-50%

  7. Homework • Students will be expected to read daily. They will keep a reading log requiring a PARENT SIGNATURE WEEKLY. This is a daily grade. No signature, no grade. • Other homework is assigned on an “as needed” basis. Some times we have more, some times none. • I like to do as much work in class as possible so I can assist and monitor activities.

  8. Behavior and Expectations • Students are expected to come to class with all supplies needed for learning • Bathroom and water breaks are to be taken before tardy bell or between classes • Undesired behaviors will be given verbal warning and record will be kept. Third time planner will be signed and parent contact will be made for parent assistance

  9. If I am contacting you regarding behavior or academics, it is because I have already given the student multiple opportunities to correct the problem during class. PLEASE NOTE: A good working relationship between home and school is the single most effective measure to assure your child’s success.

  10. Considerations about how to EXIT the ESL Program • Every student exiting ESL must score the required grade on the following tests: • OLPT (Oral Language Proficiency Test) • ITBS (7th graders only) • TELPAS: Reading, Writing, Listening, Speaking • STARR reading (all grades) • STARR writing (7th graders only) • LPAC Committee • You, the parent, can choose to take your child out of the ESL program any time you wish. You will need to sign a waiver form which says you have chosen to deny ESL services for your child. Your child will then be placed in a regular ELA class.

  11. I look forward to working with the students this year. I want them to have fun with their learning, but in a structured format. Learning best takes place using a variety of visual, tactile, and kinesthetic activities. But I keep the “bar” held high, so on task behavior is best for all students.Thank you for the privilege of teaching your children.

  14. How Can YOU help? • Check and SIGN reading logs. • Review vocabulary list. • Make sure students are well supplied • Ask about and help with homework . Most work will be done in class, but reading daily is important. • Have your child read aloud to you. • Have a place at home where English is spoken. • Remind students to be responsible and prepared. • Donate recommended supplies to the classroom. • Contact me if you need assistance. steve.goodman@fortbendisd.com
