  1. COSMIC PW vs. Ground_based GPS PW Matching method:< 1deg, <1hr, and dh < 100m • Need global independent • PW retrieval:Ground_based GPS • (International Global Navigation • Satellite Systems (IGS)), • Wang, et al., 2006) • Not geo-location dependent • Long term stability • Retrieval uncertainty is not • sensitive to the instrument types Mean Ground_based PW-COSMIC PW = -0.2 mm Slide 6

  2. Why COSMIC-II is essential for weather prediction and climate (after 2012) ? RO measurements from 12 LEOS will enable monitoring of the evolution of temperature and moisture structures in clear/cloudy skies with high accuracy and very high vertical resolution

  3. What satellite data would we have (or not) for NWP and climate monitoring ? • No HES (Hyper-spectral Environmental Suite) onboard GOES-R in 2013 • GOES-R :Advanced Baseline Imager (ABI); Space Environmental In-Situ Suite (SEISS); Solar Ultra Violet Imager (SUVI); Extreme Ultra Violet / X-Ray Irradiance Sensors (EXIS); Geostationary Lightning Mapper (GLM) and Magnetometer (MAG). • MetOp is in a sun-synchronous orbit. The measurements are stationary in local time and the diurnal cycle is never fully sampled. After 2011, we will not have enough RO data to cover a good diurnal cycle for the global climate analysis. • NPP (CrIS, ATMS, MIS, OMPS, no VIIRS) • NPOESS

  4. New sciences from COSMIC-II: • Global water vapor diurnal cycle • With ABI (ABI products include, but are not limited to, cloud mask, surface and • Cloud type classification mask, cloud property, total precipitable water, total ozone, • And surface property, all with high spatial and temporal resolutions) and COSMIC-II: • good for monitoring convection system and clouds • Evolution of PBL • Fill up the gap between NOAA/NASA missions (e.g., no VIIRS on NPP; need trade-off • studies) • More collocations with MW and IR sounders for inter-calibration • Better identifying the radiative bias from radiosonde with different sensor types
