What is the NSSCF? • Joint initiative of Australian and Queensland governments • A national investment of $2.3 billion • To help schools provide ICT for students in Years 9 to 12 • By 31 March 2011 – 1:2 ratio was achieved • By 31 December 2011, Queensland schools will have deployed over 100,000 computers to achieve a 1:1 ratio in years 9 – 12 • Does not cover year 8 laptop programs

ICT in the Australian Curriculum • ICT is represented in the Australian Curriculum as a general capability: Competence in ICT • ‘Students develop ICT competence as they learn to use ICT effectively and appropriately when investigating, creating and communicating ideas and information at school, at home, at work and in their communities.’ (ACARA, 2010) • Students develop ICT competence when they learn to: • Investigate with ICT • Create with ICT • Communicate with ICT • Operate ICT

  6. Online Classroom = Open Communication • Online Classrooms mean: • Student access 24/7 to any wifi device • Parent access to news, staff, subject information, assignments and homework (in some cases) • No parent access to documents or discussions areas

More advice about security • Due care and personal responsibility needs to be taken by participating students • Each laptop is a valuable resource • Our school has elected to install lockers for the Lighthouse Classes. • Year 11 and 12 students can elect to hire a locker with a security deposit, however this is NOT essential.

Device connectivity • Within school grounds • A scalable, high-density wireless connection • Outside school grounds • 3G connectivity – this offers students an unique opportunity for personalised learning - anywhere, any time • Also … • Private internet connection can be used (only if students have access to local administration rights)

  12. Help and support • All information on our 1:1 Website (see next slide) • Toll-free telephone helpdesk OR school phone number • Available from 7am to 8pm for 3G devices • Operated by FLSHS for non-3G devices • An online portal available 24 hours a day, seven days a week for all Acer devices.

  13. Laptop Warranty and Damage? • Warranty • Free of charge (e.g. Hard drive failure, faulty video cables) • Accidental Damage • $50 for first offence • $100 for second offence • $150 for each subsequent offence • Undue Care / Wilful Damage • Cost to fix the machine(e.g. Screen $247)

  14. What if the laptop is lost or stolen? • Built-in protection software will be initiated when: • A police crime report number has been issued • The student’s parents provide a statutory declaration

  15. What if the laptop is not recovered? • The cost of replacement is: • First case: $200 ex GST • Subsequent cases: full replacement cost

What do I need to do? • Read and sign the Student Laptop Charter • Your child(ren) need(s) to read and sign it too • The charter sets out the guidelines for acceptable use outside of school – these guidelines can be negotiated between the school, parent and student (ie: local administration rights) • Full document available on the 1:1 Website Front Page • Your ongoing partnership is essential to the success of this program • Ensure school fees are up-to-date

What does each student need to do? • Care for their laptop - http://tinyurl.com/AcerCareVideo • Bring their laptop to school every day • Fully charge their laptop (at home) • No charging allowed at school EVER (P = Prepared) • Make sure they back-up their work regularly • Follow school policies and procedures: • Acceptable computer and internet use • Responsible Behaviour Plan for Students • Always use the provided crush proof case provided • No: you can not supply your own case

Backing up data: A student responsibility • The laptop has built in backup features to recover the Operating System only (Windows 7) • Students are responsible for their own data • Students are encouraged to save their work to their D: drive for ease of management • Data should be backed up to such devices as a pen drive or an external USB storage drive • There is some minor provision for students to store data on their school (currently 50Mb) H:
