Chapter 9 Selecting and Designing a Student’s Augmentative Communication System
What is an Augmentative Communication System? • Provides the user with the ability to… • Construct a method using symbols • Deliver that message to another person • Further respond to the receiver in a timely manner • Must enable the user to initiate or sustain a conversation with another
Myths of Using a Augmentative Communication System • Will inhibit further development of speech • Specific levels of cognitive abilities are required prior to using • A student must present specific adaptive behavior skills (eye contact, pointing) • Requires some level of literacy skills • Prerequisites are required
Components to Be Identified When Choosing an Augmentative Communication Solution • To what extent can the student access symbolic language? What kind of symbols are most understandable to the student? • What messages would the student most likely need and want to express to others? (vocab.) • What parameters and challenges does the student present regarding access to the use of these devices? Which access method would be most effective at this time?
Selecting and Designing • The system must be carefully designed for use within the student’s natural environment. • Consider student’s developmental status & current/future communication skills • People involved: professional who is trained/experienced; teachers; student; parent; anyone involved with the student
