  1. Silence

  2. The average American teen spends about 20 hours a week watching television

  3. and sends 672 texts in a week.

  4. This doesn’t take into account: • Music • Internet • Movies • Phone conversations • Radio • Print Media

  5. All in all, the average teen consumes 7.5 hours of media a day. • That’s just less than 53 hours a week

  6. Why is silence so hard to deal with?

  7. Do you ever wish God’s voice would be louder in your life?

  8. Is there an area in your life you need to hear from the Lord? • Do you need direction? • Counsel? • Rest? • Peace?

  9. Be silent and know that I am GodPsalm 46:10

  10. Come to me, • all you who are weary and burdened • and I will give you rest. • (Matt 11:28)

  11. Do you ever surround yourself with noise intentionally?

  12. If I’m not still, • and if I don’t listen, • how is Jesus going to give me rest?

  13. “Search your hearts and be silent.” • Psalm 4:4

  14. Have you spent the same amount of time worrying and talking about your difficult, confusing situations as you have spent in silence, listening to what God might have to say?

  15. Do you sometimes avoid silence • because you’re afraid • of what God • might actually have to say to you?

  16. But Jesus often • withdrew • to lonely places • and prayed • Luke 5:16

  17. These were regular disciplines Jesus had. • Silence. • Solitude.

  18. Does • my schedule, • my time, • my life • look like that of a person who wants to hear God’s voice?

  19. Am I ever alone • or do I always need somebody around me?

  20. Silence gives us space. • Space for reflection • Space for questions

  21. Space from all the voices telling us who we are and assigning us value based on the world’s standards.

  22. The LORD said, • “Go out and stand on the mountain in the presence of the LORD, for the LORD is about to pass by.”

  23. Then a great and powerful wind tore the mountains apart and shattered the rocks before the LORD, • but the LORD was not in the wind.

  24. After the wind there was an earthquake, • but the LORD was not in the earthquake.

  25. After the earthquake came a fire, • but the LORD was not in the fire.

  26. And after the fire came a gentle whisper. • When Elijah heard it, he pulled his cloak over his face and went out and stood at the mouth of the cave. • 1 Kings 19:11-13

  27. Often God speaks with whispers and gentle nudges of the heart.

  28. Is it possible that you’ve been searching for God in the winds.. • The earthquakes and fires… • And he’s waiting to speak to you in the silence?
