  1. WATER WELL INTERFERENCE RECOMMENDATIONS FOR SMALL AND LARGE QUANTITY WELL OWNERS

  2. What is Water Well Interference? Groundwater is not an infinite resource. The pumping of groundwater from a well can influence the amount of water available at the surface (lakes, rivers, ponds, etc.) and on surrounding land below the ground. The effects of typical well pumping on an aquifer have been extensively studied and documented over time. When the pumping of a large quantity well effects the ability of a small quantity well to generate water, water well interference occurs.

  3. SMALL QUANTITY WELL WATER WELL INTERFERENCE EXAMPLE Property line Static level Radius of influence Drawdown Cone of depression WATER LEVEL BELOW PUMP INTAKE Pumping level LARGE QUANTITY WELL

  4. REMEMBER: The effects of large quantity well pumping may not be IMMEDIATE. “Cone of Depression” extends deeper and wider as well pumping rate and duration of pumping increases…. LARGE QUANTITY WELL SMALL QUANTITY WELLS

  5. THE POTENTIAL FOR WATER WELL INTERFERENCE DEPENDS ON MANY FACTORS: DISTANCE BETWEEN WELLS AQUIFER CHARACTERISTICS WELL DEPTHS DEPTHS OF PUMP INTAKES WITHIN THE WELLS AQUIFER RECHARGE PATTERNS RATE AND DURATION OF WELL PUMPING A study conducted by a groundwater specialist is often necessary to determine if a large quantity withdrawal is effecting the water level within a small quantity well.

  6. I OWN A SMALL QUANTITY WELL I THINK I’M BEING IMPACTED BY THE WITHDRAWAL OF A LARGE QUANTITY WELL NOW WHAT? Document when and to what degree your well is having problems. Hire a registered well drilling contractor to determine if the problem is due to a lack of water or a mechanical issue. Contact the large quantity well owner and attempt to resolve the concern. To resolve the well interference problem, you may need to lower the pump in the well or have a deeper well drilled.

  7. I OWN A LARGE QUANTITY WELL I THINK I MIGHT IMPACT SMALL QUANTITY WELLS WITH MY NEW OR EXISTING WITHDRAWAL NOW WHAT? PERFORM YIELD TEST TO DELINEATE AREAL EXTENT OF AQUIFER DEWATERING YIELD TEST PROCEDURES available at: www.michigan.gov/deq Click on “Water”, “Drinking Water”, “Water Well Construction”, “Directory of Operational Memos/Policies/Guidance

  8. I OWN A LARGE QUANTITY WELL I PERFORMED THE RECOMMENDED YIELD TEST NOW WHAT? IF ANALYSIS OF THE YIELD TEST DATA SHOWS SIGNIFICANT DRAWDOWN OF THE GROUNDWATER LEVEL AT THE PROPERTY LINE OR AT THE CLOSEST WATER WELL ON ADJACENT PROPERTY TAKE ACTION! MODIFY THE PUMPING RATE, DURATION, OR TIMING OF THE GROUNDWATER WITHDRAWAL TO ELIMINATE OR MINIMIZE IMPACTS ENTER INTO AN AGREEMENT WITH ADJACENT WELL OWNERS TO MODIFY THEIR WELLS TO PREVENT WELL FAILURE DUE TO GROUNDWATER LOWERING

  9. I OWN A LARGE QUANTITY WELL I DID NOT PERFORM A YIELD TEST, BUT WANT TO TAKE A PROACTIVE APPROACH WITH SMALL QUANTITY WELL OWNERS NOW WHAT? ARRANGE FOR THEM TO CONTACT YOU IF A WELL PROBLEM ARISES IDENTIFY NEIGHBORS WITH WELLS IN YOUR AREA CONTACT WELL DRILLER FOR ASSESSMENT OF WELL WELL DRILLER PROPOSES REMEDY IF WELL PROBLEM ARISES LARGE QUANTITY WELL OWNER IS A HERO POTENTIAL COURT COSTS AVOIDED LARGE QUANTITY WELL OWNER PAYS FOR RESOLUTION
