4. Mission of London Health Libraries • The mission of London Health Libraries is to support continuous improvement in the health and well-being of patients and the diverse community in London. We achieve this by enabling the delivery of prompt and convenient services that: • inform patient choice • improve the quality of decision-making • support the development of the whole workforce London Health Libraries

5. Library Services for Health & Social Care Staff in London • 80 service points receiving NHS funding • Over 400 library staff (35% professionally qualified) • Investment of over £8.5 million across London (includes £611K for e-resources). 72% is educational funding • We serve staff in Acute & Mental Health Trusts and PCTs • HE libraries provide services for healthcare students and some NHS staff - 5 medical schools and 9 non-medical universities. Over 40% of London’s NHS workforce look to an HE-managed library as their main service London Health Libraries

Impact of Policy on Library Services • To support four key areas of the NHS and social care: • Clinical decision-making • Commissioning decisions & policy making • Research and development ; Lifelong learning • To provide access & support for all staff groups • To improve services to community and social care • To ensure services are provided to inform patients, carers and the general public • To support formal education & work-based learning • To be evidence-based London Health Libraries

7. SHAs & library and knowledge services • Strategic leadership & co-ordination of libraries and e-learning rests with each SHA • Post of Strategic Library Services Development Manager – based at Deanery • Working closely with eKAT staff, I am responsible for the co-ordination of library and knowledge services to NHS staff and students across London London Health Libraries

8. Role of SHA Library Lead • Strategic leadership • Service development • Staff development • Partnership development and collaborative working • Performance management • Communication • … but role is wider than just these areas London Health Libraries

9. Other areas of responsibility • E-learning – liaising with Trust leads for e-learning (often Heads of Training and Development) • Liaising with others involved in education, e.g. Deanery staff, Postgraduate Centre managers etc.. London Health Libraries

10. London Health Libraries Council • Has been established since January 2007 • Comprises SHA library lead, Head of eKAT, 2 reps from each area group, HE rep and NLH Institute Team rep • Meets bi-monthly on average • Sets and implements strategic direction for library services in London and ensures cohesion of LHL network London Health Libraries

11. London Health Libraries Working Groups • Information & Learning Resources • Staff Development • Service Development • NHS-HE Partnership (new group to be launched on November 26th) • + other special interest groups (e.g. CLIST) London Health Libraries

12. London strategy 2005 - 2008 Better libraries, better health, better healthcare • Now due for revision. When developing a new strategy, we will need to take into account: • Creation of NHS Evidence service • The Hill report • National Service Framework • Healthcare for London (Darzi) • World Class Commissioning London Health Libraries

National perspective • SHA Library Lead represents London on the National Library for Health Co-ordinating Group and national e-learning leads group • London is also represented on NLH working groups – Staff Development, Service Development, Content & Collections and Technical Design Authority Group London Health Libraries
