The goal of this lesson is to… • Demonstrate knowledge of bullying and its impact on students’ personal/social development
Students will be able to… • Identify knowledge of bullying—statistics, its definition, types of bullying, who the bullies are, who can be targeted, and reporting • Demonstrate knowledge of self-empowerment and self-advocacy skills to combat bullying • Apply the conflict-resolution process using case scenarios/situations • Use the checklist to assess if each group applied conflict-resolution skills in their case scenarios/situations
Research says… In the U.S. • One out of every four (25%) children will be bullied in school this month according to the U.S. Department of Justice • The American Association of School Psychologists reports that over 160,000 children miss school for fear of being bullied every day • Bullying tops the list of triggers leading to childhood suicide attempts • According to the Secret Service and the U.S. Department of Education on 37 school shootings, including Columbine High School, found that almost three-quarters (75%) of student shooters felt bullied, threatened, attacked or injured by others Liepe-Levinson & Levinson, 2005 http://www.apa.org/monitor/oct02/bullying.html
At Bonita Vista Middle School… • 29% have been harassed because of race, ethnicity, gender, sexual orientation, or disability • 22% students have been in a physical fight • Physical fights mostly occur among males (45%) WestEd. What is Bullying? • Power imbalance between the bully and the one being bullied • An intent to cause harm • Against someone considered less powerful • Behavior repeated over time The Respect for All Project, 2004
Bullying takes many forms… • Physical • hitting, shoving, kicking • Emotional or Psychological • spreading lies, gossiping, isolating someone • Verbal • name-calling, teasing, threatening • Sexual • unwanted sexual comments or actions The Respect for All Project, 2004
Who are the bullies? • Bullies come from various ethnic, cultural, and religious groups • Not distinguished by physical appearance or who they are, but how they are treating others!!! Liepe-Levinson & Levinson, 2005
Who can be targeted? ANYONE!!!
