  3. What is a Program Evaluation? Reflective Data-driven process Performed by internal or external organization • Focus on: • student achievement • the role current curriculum and instructional practices play in supporting achievement

  4. Why Conduct One? BCSD requirement; 5-year cycle Review of the library program’s integration into the greater learning community Shared cross-curricular experience Data revealed strengths and weaknesses Opportunity for a formal report to the Board of Education and the community

Benefits • Fostered collaborative reflection to inform our vision • Involved all district stakeholders • Administrators gained deeper understanding of our program • Statistics and data gathered - useful for advocacy • Members gained fluency with a wide range of evolving standards, including ours

  7. How Did the Evaluation Improve Our Libraries? • Additional staffing • Additional database funding • Data to support grant funding • Fostered a closer partnership and sense of respect with district leaders • Provided a foundation for updating curriculum and vision

  8. Roadblocks and Disappointments • Timing • Unavailability /inconsistency of data • Committee’s inability to visit exemplary library programs • Limited opportunity for dialogue with Board of Education • Certain areas highlighted by librarians were not sufficiently addressed

  9. Advice • Think about the end goal • Determine desired information and its availability before the process begins • Not enough time/support for a full review? • Do the SLMPE rubric as a baseline.
