Vocabulary Instruction • An effective teacher will preview text that students are going to read and pre-teach academic and domain-specific words that students must understand in order to comprehend that text. • Content-area vocabulary instruction will serve students best if it focuses on words that students will see often and across several subjects.
Which words? • Words needed to fully comprehend the text • Words likely to appear in future texts from any discipline • Words that are part of a word family or semantic network
Tiers of words • Tier 1: everyday speech, learned in early grades or at home, learned largely through conversation • Tier 2: characterize written and especially academic text, technical writing, literary texts • Tier 3: mostly in informational passages, specific to a domain or field of study, often explicitly defined by the text and repeatedly used
