  1. All ABOUT BRACES

  2. WHY DO WE NEED BRACES?

  3. Makes your teeth look great again. • Helps in eliminating of having difficulty to pronounce certain sounds due • to poor alignment. • Helps in curing imperfection arising due to crooked, crowded & twisted • teeth or having jaw malocclusion or improper bite syndrome. • Visible changes in the smile pattern. • Orthodontic treatment involves straightening of crooked, crowded or • protruded teeth, close gaps between teeth & correction of the bite so that • when the mouth is closed the top & bottom meet together.

  4. TYPES OF BRACES FOR TEETH

  5. Fixed Braces – Conventional & non-removable that are fixed to tooth • with wires. • Removable Braces – Useful in limited tooth movements & removable • while cleaning, eating & other activities. • Functional Braces - Useful in treating problems with jaw & teeth • positions. • Headgear – Device worn to hold the back teeth in position while the • frontal ones are treated or to bring them in position.

  6. BRACES CLASSIFICATION • Metal Braces - Constructed of high quality stainless steel brackets & an • arch wire which goes through the brackets and puts a uniform force. • Ceramic Braces - Made up of white ceramic wires and brackets. As strong • as metal braces but are invisible on teeth and hence provide better face • visuals. • Lingual Braces – Known as inside braces as they are attached to the inside • of the teeth. • Invisalign Braces – Just like transparent mouth guards which athletes from • combat sports wear & most modern solutions in orthodontic issues.

  7. TEETH BRACES AGE LIMIT

  8. Ideally age for braces considered around 12 or 13 as the teeth are not fully • grown and bone formation is still under process. • Adults have more limited opportunities to improve as the bones & teeth are • done growing and developing. Might have to wear braces for longer period of • time compared to a teenager. • Depending on the goals of treatment, many adults can get the smile they • want in year and less.

  9. FOOD HABITS WITH BRACES

  10. Avoid hard and chewy foods like meat, nuts and candy. • Breads, Cooked veggies, pulpy fruits can be eaten easily. • Avoid foods with high colour like caramel, soft drinks and turmeric to reduce • the risk of stained teeth. • Foods with sweeteners erode the enamel of teeth, making them yellowish and • hence should be avoided. • Children to be strictly discouraged chewing upon pencils and hard stuffs.

  11. BRACES FOR KIDS

  12. Braces requirement in children due to crooked teeth, crowding, overlapping • teeth or bad bite. • Problem caused due to baby teeth lost soon, any accidents or injury or • thumb sucking habits. • Can start the treatment once the problem is figured out like crowding or • irregular teeth. • Traditional braces for kids available in many colours and shades making • them attractive. • Teeth should be brushed regularly after every meal and special kind of • brushes and flosses should be used. • In case of pain or broken braces, an over the top pain reliever can be taken.

  13. BRACES FOR ADULTS

  14. Braces can be fitted at any age of the time for adults. • Visit orthodontist in case of toothache, gum diseases, crooked smile or jaw • and ear pain. • Might have to consider surgery as bones are done growing in adults. • Process may take longer than a child, however it depends of case to case • basis. • Do consult with a regular dentist first so that there is no complications due to • bone remodelling or bone loss. • Braces can affect pregnancy in females.

  15. BRACES TREATMENT DURATION

  16. Different on case to case basis. • Generally it takes between one to three years to take braces off. • Depends on the types of treatment – i.e. conventional braces takes • more time than lingual or Invisalign braces. • Age – Young patients tends to achieve quicker result than their older • counterpart. • Case complexity – Mild misalignment will take less time compared to • overcrowding or under bite and over bite issues. • Patient Compliance – also depends on how well the patient takes • care of the treatment.

  17. Braces Process

  18. A thorough pre check-up is required in first visit to plan the working of • braces. • Orthodontist will thoroughly examine the teeth, mouth & jaw. • X-rays of the mouth required to better understand current laying positions of • the teeth. • Might take a mould of your teeth and make a cast to decide how to make the • braces which can withstand the required pressure on each tooth. • Installation is not a painful process these days due to technological • advances. • Can take normal pain relievers if you fill a dull throbbing or soreness.

  19. BRACES WORKING

  20. Works by putting constant pressure to the teeth and thus moving them • gradually in the required position. • Pressure is applied through arch wire attached to the bracket which transfers • the force to the teeth. • Sometimes rubber bands or spacers or springs are added to gain more force • on the particularly stubborn teeth. • Brackets are attached to the teeth based on pre check-up cast along with the • insertion of wires. • A narrow and flexible wire will be used to join the brackets in the initial stages. • As teeth start to become straighter, thicker arch wire is used to assert higher • pressure on the teeth and align them in proper position.

  21. ADVANTAGES OF BRACES • Straightening of teeth – helps the patient with dental problems as well as • raises a confident smile. • Proper Alignment of teeth that are crooked. • Bringing the teeth closer and reducing the gap. • Prevents chipping and overly worn teeth due to uneven jaws or over-bite • and under-bite. • Prevents gum diseases by spacing the teeth properly and making space • available for flossing and cleaning. • Prevents jaw-weakness and muscle pain resulting from • misaligned teeth.

  22. CLEANING TEETH WITH BRACES

  23. Regularly brushing the teeth after meals will keep food from becoming • stuck in the brackets or between the wires. • May require special floss which helps flossing between the teeth and • wire and around the braces. • Before brushing, rinse off your mouth with water so as to loosen any • stuck food particles. • Brush your each tooth individually by moving your brush in circular • motion at a 45-degree angle from gum line for 10 seconds with gentle • pressure. • Make sure to brush your tongue and the roof of your mouth as well.

  24. HOW TO WHITEN TEETH AFTER BRACES? • If lingual or invisible braces are worn, whitening products will • work much as they do for people without braces. • With the conventional braces it is not at all suitable to use • whitening products since a part of teeth is covered with glue • and bracket. • Salt rinsing, baking soda brushing can be effective with • conventional braces. • Using good fluoride toothpastes and mouthwashes along with a • regular brushing and flossing schedule will also help in keeping • the tooth in up-to date condition.

  25. Teeth removal for Braces

  26. A tooth removal may be necessary if there is less space available. • In adults, the bone and teeth are formed very well and they cannot • be moved to create space. The only ways are surgery or a tooth • removal. • When the child’s jaw development hasn’t met the speed of the • tooth maturation, crowding occurs. Teeth twist into unusual • positions so that they can accommodate all of the erupting teeth • around them. Extractions are necessary in such cases. • Apart from it when there is an impacted tooth, i.e. it is a permanent • tooth that wants to come out but can’t because of presence of • lower teeth, it is generally extracted and then aligned properly.
