  2. Junior Project Paper Requirements • 6 body paragraphs/8 total • 3 CDs per paragraph • MLA format, title page, works cited, etc. • Turnitin.com submission • 4 research sources minimum • Sources must be academic, scholarly articles from recognizable foundations, coalitions, etc.

Thesis Statement What is a Thesis Statement? • A one- or two-sentence condensation of the argument or analysis that is to follow Why Should Your Essay Contain a Thesis Statement? • to test your ideas by distilling them into a sentence or two • to better organize and develop your argument • to provide your reader with a “guide” to your argument • In general, your thesis statement will accomplish these goals if you think of the thesis as the answer to the question your paper explores.

How to Generate a Thesis Statement • Reduce topic to a single, specific question. • compose one or two complete sentences answering that question. • Question: What are some of the problems associated cancer and how is The American Cancer Society trying to solve those problems? • Question: How does domestic violence affect its victims and the community and how is the National Coalition Against Domestic Violence aiding those effects?

  5. How to Tell a Strong Thesis Statement from a Weak One. A strong thesis statement… • takes some sort of stand. • justifies discussion. • expresses one main idea. • is specific.

  6. Thesis: Occasion/Position format 1. Write the occasion – the reason for the essay (dependent clause) 2. Write the position – what you hope to prove, explain, solve (independent clause) • Occasions always start with one of the following: • In order that • If • After • Since • Before • Unless • Although • So that • Whenever • As long as • As • Even though

Example Occasion/Position Thesis • As long as poverty exists in Third World Countries, Compassion International will seek to feed the starving. • Even though a cure for cancer has eluded researchers, the American Cancer Society is committed to continuing the clinical lab trials. • Although child prostitution is rampant throughout war-torn third-world countries, World Vision seeks to provide education and support to end this devastating phenomenon.

Where do I find sources? • School Research Database: EBSCO Host Online http://search.ebscohost.com/ • Username: bonita Password: bearcat • Click on EBSCO host Research Databases • Select any appropriate databases: ERIC or Topic Source are great places to start. • Library: www.bonitahigh.net- school- school library- Bonita High School- catalog. • Search by topic, author, keyword, etc. • Be sure to see if books are available.

Sentence about Charity’s solution to Sub-problem # 3 *Do a thorough job because these will become your topic sentences for all body paragraphs.

Example Big Picture Outline For P/S • As long as AIDS is needlessly ending thousands of lives in the United States, the AIDS Foundation will continue to provide education and research to stop the spread of this epidemic. • Problem: AIDS In America 1. Lack of education about safe sex practices 2. Drug use with infected needles 3. No health insurance and/or money to be tested. 4. Individual fear of being tested for AIDS/HIV • Solution: AIDS Foundation 1. Fund combination safe-sex and abstinence education programs in schools 2. Clean needle exchange programs 3. Free HIV and AIDS testing clinic 4. Pre and post-test counseling, anonymous testing, free counseling for treatment.

Note cards- CD Collectors • Purpose of note cards • To collect concrete details • Begin sifting through research • Stay organized • Guidelines for note cards: • Only ONE Concrete Detail per note card • Must be EXACT Quotes WORD FOR WORD • Must be NEAT and LEGIBLE… • if you can’t read them, they won’t be useful when you begin to outline your paper. • must be on a ring or in a spiral note card book

  17. Note cards- Now what? • Find a good CD from source A • Highlight CD which should already by highlighted and labeled as a problem/solution. • Copy CD word for word in the middle of the note card

  19. Some note card definitions/explanations • Header: A short (few words) explaining that fact • ex. Child Cancer Death statistic or homeless teens fact • Source letter: This is how you know which cards go with which sources. • A card marked with A should go with a source marked A • Concrete Detail: A fact or statistic or piece of evidence found in one of your sources. • Page # or section: • Write the page # if it’s from a book or article. • from a website write “net” followed by the section in (“parentheses and in quotes”) or the (“website title”) if you will use multiple sections. • Ex. net (“Cancer research”)

  20. Some note card definitions/explanations CD’s must be • copied WORD FOR WORD • put in quotes to avoid plagiarism • If the person who said the quote, isn’t the person who wrote the article • precede your CD with Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. said “I have a dream.”

  22. Working Bibliography • What and why? • To keep track of your sources • Will become your Works Cited page • www.easybib.com • Be sure to create an account so you can save your working bibliography. This will become your works cited and it WILL CHANGE.

  24. Internal Citations • General rules: • Use the first words that are found in your works cited entry. • If the article title has six or more words… • create a shortened version of the title • If article title is five words or less, • use the entire title

Internal Citations Examples • Ex: “In the United States in 2003, the poverty rate for all individuals was 12.5%” (Payne 4). • “quote” (Author’s last name page #). • Ex: “The war in Uganda has been called the most neglected humanitarian emergency in the world today” (“The War in Northern Uganda”). • “quote” (“name of article or website page”).

  26. Quote within a quote • Ex: “In the United States in 2003, the poverty rate for all individuals was 12.5%, making this ‘the most neglected humanitarian emergency in the world’”(Payne 4).

Transitional Sentence Examples • Problem to problem: Though gun injury is the most significant problem with lenient gun control, there are also several notable secondary problems. • Problem to solution: Though there are many problems with lenient gun control, there are some solutions that will help reduce the problems. • Effect to effect: Though there are many physical effects of breast cancer, there are also emotional effects. • Effect to effect: Though chemotherapy has a physical effect on breast cancer patients, it also has an emotional one.

  28. 4 kinds of lead ins/outs • Author Attribution- Establishes credibility. • The first time you refer to an author in your paper. • If you are using a quote from someone other than the cited author. • Transitional Phrase- When you are comparing, contrasting or linking ideas within a single paragraph. • Completing the Sentence-When your concrete detail is not a full sentence (independent clause) on its own. • Commentary- tells WHY the cd is important, it is used when you want to seamlessly weave your commentary in with your concrete detail. *see worksheet for specifics and a how-to
