Importance of a Bequest Initiative • Results of the NJPS • 85% of those surveyed have wills • Only 3% have designated Federation or Foundation • Transfer of wealth • $41 trillion over the next 50 years • Potential in bequests: • If 20 individuals each asked 5 donors and received an average gift of $50K, they would generate $5M
Program Goals • To secure bequests for permanent endowments • To develop strong leadership and technical skills • To build public awareness about the power of bequests and endowments • To build a regional model for legacy giving to strengthen the Western Massachusetts Jewish community
Is Western Massachusetts Ready for Create a Jewish Legacy? Criteria for initiating a bequest program: • Fiscal health and stability • Experience in attracting gift support • Quality of donor base • Board support • Commitment
Risk Analysis • How many donors have died in the last 5-10 years without legacy gifts? • How many current gifts are endowed? • Are we being proactive or reactive? • Do we work in partnership with local agencies on endowment planning?
UJC’s role in CJL • Consulting • Pilots & in the field • Senior professional staff available • Outside consultants as needed • Marketing • CJL website • Brochure, ads, other collateral materials • Training • Ongoing training opportunities, including seminars and conference calls
Role of Create a Jewish Legacy Program • Engage professional and lay leadership across region • Designate staff (Program Manager) to provide management, hands-on coaching and training for local agencies • Convene regular meetings and trainings of legacy teams • Recruit, educate and train solicitors for each agency
Role of Jewish Endowment Foundation • Provide support to all Jewish organizations seeking legacy and endowment gifts • Provide recognition and ongoing stewardship • Hold and administer all funds • Provide incentive grants (up to $10,000 per year) to each agency for meeting specific benchmark goals • In partnership with HGF, provide program oversight
Role of Harold Grinspoon Foundation (Grinspoon Institute for Jewish Philanthropy) • In partnership with JEF, provide program oversight • Provide funding for Create a Jewish Legacy infrastructure: • Program Manager • Marketing • Consulting • Training
Role of Federations (Western MA & the Berkshires) • Work with local agencies to identify and co-solicit appropriate donors • Identify community priorities through collaborative fundraising process which can be transformed into endowment opportunities • Encourage PACE & LOJE campaign to support Federation and local community
Role of Local Agencies in consultation with CJL staff (JEF & HGF) • Form a legacy team • Create a written action plan • Develop a case statement • Set endowment goals • Build enthusiasm and commitment • Solicit legacy prospects as defined by action plan
