Semiconductors are defined as materials that have a connectivity between nonconductors and conductors, according to the Department of Materials Science and Engineering at the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign. Nonconductors are generally classified as ceramics, while conductors are generally classified as metals. Semiconductors can be a variety of elements. For instance, semiconductors can be pure elements such as germanium or silicon, or they can be compounds such as cadmium selenide or gallium arsenide.
