Context of the Beatitudes • (Matt 4:23) “And Jesus went about all Galilee, teaching in their synagogues, and preaching the gospel of the kingdom, and healing all manner of sickness and all manner of disease among the people.” • (Matt 7:28) “And it came to pass, when Jesus had ended these sayings, the people were astonished at his doctrine:” • Sermon on mount – Principles of Kingdom
Preliminary Principles • Jesus came to establish a spiritual Kingdom • (Mark 1:14-15) “Now after that John was put in prison, Jesus came into Galilee, preaching the gospel of the kingdom of God, And saying, The time is fulfilled, and the kingdom of God is at hand: repent ye, and believe the gospel.”

“Blessed are the poor in spirit: for theirs is the kingdom of heaven” • Who are ‘poor in spirit’? • What sense does the kingdom of heaven belong to them? • Humble person? Humility? • One who recognizes that his own knowledge and wisdom could not guide him • Needs guidance • Accepts God’s word

For therein is the righteousness of God revealed from faith to faith: as it is written, The just shall live by faith.”

“Blessed are they which do hunger and thirst after righteousness: for they shall be filled.” • One must hunger and thirst for it • Not forced on anyone • Not coercive – but persuasive • One must realize his state in sin in comparison with the blessing of salvation • Hungering and thirsting is the inward desire for what the gospel will do • Obeying it brings one into the full measure of pardon and justification

“Blessed are the merciful: for they shall obtain mercy.” • When God saves a person by baptism, who has believed and repented, it is according to his mercy • According to God’s merciful plan • We show mercy when we show others how to be saved by the mercy of God
“Blessed are the pure in heart: for they shall see God” • Not in the sense of Chastity or Virtue • Understanding • (Luke 11:34) “The light of the body is the eye: therefore when thine eyeissingle, thy whole body also is full of light; but when thine eye is evil, thy body also is full of darkness.” • (Eph 1:18) “The eyesofyourunderstanding being enlightened; that ye may know what is the hope of his calling, and what the riches of the glory of his inheritance in the saints,”
“Blessed are the pure in heart: for they shall see God” • Enlighten heart is one that sees the truth • Knowing heart • Heart of understanding • Pure in heart – A heart that understands, the knowing, the enlightened • Comprehends the truth • Pure in Heart – Hears the truth, obeys it, enters the kingdom, and sees God! • Points to Pentecost – Gospel Preview
“Blessed are the peacemakers: for they shall be called the children of God.” • Not referring to arbitration • Connects to John’s announcement • (John 1:29) “…Behold the Lamb of God, which taketh away the sin of the world.” • Sins = Mistakes – Transgressions • Sin = The gulf between man and God
