  3. Changing Economies • Move away from feudalism because of trade • Middle Ages: wealth = land/nobility • Renaissance : wealth = trade/money. • Growth of cities and urban workers • Not just farmers

  4. Rise of Banks • Need a place to keep money • Need loans to start businesses/trade

  6. Growth of the Middle Class • Nobles of the Middle Ages lose power to merchants/craftsmen of the Renaissance • In cities, one could take a job in the city rather than working in the field for a lord.

  8. Politics: Types of Rulers • Monarchies in France, England, Spain • Urban Oligarchies in Italian Cities • Wealthy families controlled govt • Example: Medici Family

  9. Church/Pope vs Monarchies • Church begins to lose some power as kings and queens desire more control over their country. • More realistic for the king to be in charge VS

  10. What do the governments do? • Create armies, build roads, support the arts, build schools • Taxed the people to pay for all this

  11. How did governments get the money? • Taxed the wealth of their subjects

  12. Legacy/Impact • The economies and governments of the Renaissance lay the foundation for our modern economy and government
