Out of 114 IBA: • 90 designated as SPAs • All approved as SPA, but six – significantly reduced: • Kaliakra • Rila • Pirin • Central Balkan • Lomovete • Western Rhodopes • More than 60 face immediate threats • Windfarms • House/hotels construction • Golf courses • Open extraction industry • Problems: • No real spatial planning • Easy change of landuse • No proper SEA of plans and programmes • No proper EIA procedures • Projects allowed without EIA • Projects submitted on pieces • No assessment of alternatives and • Cumulative impact • International finances against nature values • Weak MoEW and lack of political wish Complaint 2007/4850 – infringement opened Complaint 2008/4260 – infringement opened Complaint 2008/4461 – under evaluation Press the EU to ensure that EU law is followed and open infringement proceedings against Bulgaria re Kaliakra
