The GC in 2008: Facts & Figures Over 4300 active business participants in 120+ countries New business participants in 2007: 1119 1200+ non-business participants from civil society, labour, academia Equal representation in developed and developing world 49 percent small and medium-size enterprises (SMEs) 147 of the Financial Times Global 500 companies (by market cap) 70+ active local networks around the world Launches in 2007: Jordan, Vietnam, Korea, Senegal, Ivory Coast (2008: Russia)
2008 Strategic Priorities • COP • Local Networks • Issues: human rights / climate / anti-corruption • Global Compact Foundation • Subsidiaries • Strategic Initiatives: PRI / PRiME
Communication on Progress (COP) • Focus on quantity and quality • Improve capture rate (aim 50%) • More than 3300 reports in our COP database • Status of participation: non-communicating, inactive and removed
Issue focus • Work on all principles and issues • Emphasis on climate, human rights and anti-corruption • Climate Change: “Caring for Climate: A Business Leadership Platform” towards COP15 • Human Rights: 60th anniversary of UDHR - encourage business action on human rights • Anti-Corruption: currently establishing working group, with partners (PACI, TI, WBI) to produce tools and resources
Foundation for the Global Compact • Foundation established in 2006 to help raise funds in support of the work of the Global Compact • Strategy to widen funding base of the GC (currently annual contributions from small number of governments) • Ambition to match public and private funding (50/50) • Two types of contributions • Minimum voluntary contribution • Less than 250 employees: 100 USD • Between 250-1000 employees: 1000 USD • More than 5000 employees: 5000 USA • But more if of course most welcome and appreciated! • Earmarked project contribution
Other strategic priorities • Deepen collaboration with PRI and PRiME • PRI (Principles for Responsible Investment): backed by 11 trillion dollars in assets. • PRiME (Principles for Responsible Management Education): more than 100 business schools around the world endorsed the initiative.
