The Seven Sayings of the Savior 1. Father, forgive them 2. Today, you shall be with me in Paradise 3. Woman, behold thy son 4. My God, my God, why have you forsaken me 5. I thirst 6. It is finished 7. Father, into thy hands I commend my spirit
Woman, Behold Thy Son 3. A word of affection (Jn. 19:26-27) • The first three sayings of Jesus show his care for others, before considering self • Mary’s life would have great reward and great sorrow (Lk. 2:34-35)
Woman, Behold Thy Son • John, especially loved by Jesus, was the best choice (Jn. 13:23; 20:2; 21:7, 20) • John had returned to the Savior’s side after running away (Mk. 14:27, 50)
Woman, Behold Thy Son • “Woman, behold thy son …Behold, they mother” – Jesus showed respect toward Mary (Jn. 2:4) and trust toward John • Jesus set an example of honoring one’s parents (Lk. 2:51); showing care and affection for his mother (Ex. 20:12; Mt. 15:3-4; Eph. 6:1-2; 1 Tim. 5:4, 8, 16)
Woman, Behold Thy Son • Both spiritual and physical responsibilities are important • John accepted his duty without delay or reservation • Mary was honored, but not the way Catholics do today as “Mediatrix”
My God, My God 4. A word of anguish (Mt. 27:46) • This is neither the words of a condemned sinner (Calvinism), nor simply a quote to get the crowd to think about Psalm 22 • This was a cry with a loud voice
My God, My God • Jesus said “me” – What is the simple, straightforward meaning of “me”? • Jesus was in anguish like the psalmist (Psa. 22:1-2, 6, 11, 14, 24), but he still trusted in God like the psalmist (Psa. 22:8-11; 1 Pet. 2:23)
Psalm 22 1. Feeling of forsakenness (22:1-2) 2. A holy God delivers (22:3-5) 3. Reproached and despised (22:6-8) 4. Continued trust (22:9-11) 5. Trials listed (22:12-18) 6. Cry for deliverance (22:19-22) 7. The Lord praised for hearing and helping the afflicted (22:22-31)
My God, My God • Why did Jesus feel forsaken? He was sacrificed directly by his own Father (Isa. 53:4, 10; Rom. 8:32; Gal. 3:13)
I Thirst 5. A word of humanity (Jn. 19:28) • Evidence of Jesus’ humanity (Jn. 1:14; Gal. 4:4) and the intensity of Jesus’ sufferings (Note: Jesus refused the first drink meant to be an anesthetic, Mt. 27:33-34)
I Thirst • Jesus’ deep knowledge of, reverence for, and submission to scripture, from beginning (Mt. 4) to end (Jn. 19:28; see Psa. 69:21) • Jesus can sympathize with the sufferings of his people (Heb. 2:17-18; 4:16)
The Seven Sayings of the Savior • Will we fulfill the duties that Jesus has for us without delay or reservation? • Will we be in anguish after we die? (Lk. 16:23) • Will we suffer like the Lord (1 Pet. 4:16)?
