2. The purpose of this presentation is to introduce students to the organization of the Dewey Decimal System. As a result, students will be able to locate and find books on the shelves in the media center. This presentation is for elementary students in the third through fifth grades.

3. How should books be arranged in the media center? Would a system help books stay organized and easy to find?

4. Melvil Dewey 1851-1931

5. How was it done before? In Melvil's day, classification systems used a fixed design where each book was given a dedicated spot on the shelf.Each new item was put in order by when it was bought.

6. What was the problem? People had to look in many places to find books on the same subject. No two libraries used the same system.

7. What was the solution? Dewey’s idea was to use numbers from 000-999 to classify all human knowledge, arranging books by subject with the decimal system.

8. Advantages Puts books about the same subject next to each other Used by libraries all around the world Decimals help create special numbers for each topic

9. How does it work? I want a book on “The United States Civil War”. The media center has many books on the subject. What do I do?

10. In Destiny catalog, type “Civil War” in the search window. Many books choices will appear. Choose a book that best suits your needs. Notice the call number.
