  2. General Considerations • make sure that the goal and scope are well defined before writing • be as short as possible while still retaining all the relevant matter • value of the report depends not on its length but on its accuracy and utility for its readers

  3. Ethos • Element of Rhetorical Triangle • Each element is equally important in establishing strong writing

  4. Ethos • The credibility of the writer • How and Why should the reader trust you? • What can you do as a writer to ensure that the reader believes your research is valid and you understand the complications of the issue you are discussing? • Important because reader needs to trust the writer

  5. Ethos Writer asks: • How can I present myself effectively? • Hoe can I enhance my credibility and trustworthiness? • Have I established an appropriate persona? • Have I expressed my knowledge and expertise of the topic?

  6. Ethos Readers Ask: • How is the writer connected to the topic? • Does writer understand the issue being discussed? • How is the author establishing a persona? • Is writer writing as a scientist and using a formal tone with passive voice? • Or does writer use an informal tone, in a journalistic or creative style? • How does the author establishes credibility? • Has the writing been proofread for errors in tone, word use, grammar, punctuation, spelling, etc? • Is source material used effectively and appropriately? • Is source material cited correctly?
