Window Assembly • Finished window assembly depends on: • architectural design of structure • region of country/climate • material of structure • type of window • Detailers must be familiar with • installation sequence • proper weatherproofing • proper detail scale (usually 3” = 1’-0”)
Window Nomenclature Notations • Four typical areas for notations • Head, Jamb, Sill, & Mullion • Detail Assemblies are: • Head--top of window - detail 11 • Jamb--sides of window - detail 13 • Sill--bottom of window - detail 14 • Mullion--vertical between windows - detail 12
Window Construction Terms • Header(wood) • Lintel (masonry) • Post or Column • header jack • trimmer • Top plates • Cripples • Rough Sill
Window Terms • Mullion - vertical structural member between window assemblies • Sash - a frame for glass to close a window opening
Window Terms • Muntin--a bar member supporting and/or separating panes of glass in a window sash, considered a dividing bar either fixed or removable, sometimes placed between double panes of glass.
Window Types - Styles • Most Prevalent Windows Types: • casement - vertical hinge and crank • horizontal sliding - predominantly residential • double(single)-hung - vertical sliding • awning - hinges from the top of window • hopper - hinges from the bottom of window • louver (jalousie) - small glass panes allow venting • fixed sash - stationary glass unit
Window Types - Styles • Additional and special condition types: • Combination types - mixture of types together • Bay - angle projection • Bow - curved projection • Box - 90 degree projection • Skylight and Roof windows
Window Types - Materials • Wood - type of wood may differ inside/outside • Steel - commonly used in commercial buildings • Aluminum - commonly 6063-T5 • 6063 = aluminum alloy • T5 = a type of heat treatment • Vinyl/wood covered vinyl • Glazing channels - holds the glass • 3/16”, 7/32”, 1/4” single glazing • 1/2”, 5/8” double glazing (insulating)
Casement Window • hinged at jamb section • swing in or out • max ventilation
Horizontal Sliding Window • one/both sections movable • sections typically removable • horizontal arrow denotes sliding action also an “X”
Double (Single) Hung Windows • one/both sections movable • sections typically removable • vertical arrow denotes sliding action
Awning and Hopper Windows • Both have horizontal hinging • Awning hinges at the top • Hopper hinges at the bottom
Louvered/Jalousie Windows • The individual panes allow good ventilation
Bow Window • Designed about an arc • Many configurations
Bay Windows • More boxy than the Bow window • Angles of projection at normally 30, 45, 60 degrees • Amount of projection varies
Skylights/Roof Windows • Allows light and ventilation through the roof
Fixed/Picture Window • No ventilation • Custom built frame for different sizes and shapes • Also double glazed
Fixed Window Detail Pictorial • Jamb section custom milled • Shape and size may vary
Detailing Windows in Wood Construction • Usually purchased as a unit/assembly • Custom sizes/combinations easily available • Align details with each other: head, jamb, & sill • Details similar to door • window action is not important in detail, but may effect the detail • weatherproofing & installation are important • detail from window frame outward
Jamb Detail (wood) • Note that details call out weatherproofing (caulking) & show trim size callouts
Sill Detail (wood) with Pictorial THE END !!!
Drawing ExerciseWood Window Detail • Draft the elevation of a 5040 (W x H) window, 1/2” = 1’-0” at the top of the sheet, details will be added to bottom • Extend the sill so more of the wall is shown below the window sill • Give notations to coordinate sections with detail • Draft the brick to proper size showing the 3/8” joints • Bricks at window sill are turned on edge and sloped (5 degrees), overhang is 1 1/2” on the underneath side
