The Water Cycle • The movement of water on Earth involving all phases (solid, liquid, gas).
Evaporation • Changing of water from a liquid to a gas.
Transpiration • Release of water into the air by plants
Precipitation • Condensation of water (gas to liquid) – Rain/Snow
Runoff • Water flowing over Earth’s surface
Infiltration • Water permeating (entering) Earth’s surface
Water Table • Boundary between water in the lithosphere and dry soil above.
Things that Affect Infiltration(water entering the soil) • Porosity: • Amount of space (pores) between the sediments. • Greater the porosity, greater the infiltration
Shape Round particles = greater porosity = greater permeability
Packing Closely packed = lower porosity = low permeability
Sorting Sorted = greater porosity = greater permeability
Permeability Ability of water to pass through the soil
Capillarity • Attraction that allows water to mover UP! • Greatest when sediment is SMALL!
