Aims • To outline the structure of the Key Stage Four curriculum in Years 9 to 11 • To introduce the courses available and the four ‘Learning Pathways’ • To summarise key dates within the options process, and changes to reports
Personalised Learning KS4 courses consist of CORE and PERSONALISED elements: Core Taught Periods • English and English Literature 6 • Maths 5 (6 in Year 9) • Science 10 (9 in Year 9) • PE 4 • RPE; Computing/EWB5 Personalised Learning Pathway 20 Total 50
Personalised Learningin the Core In Science: • ‘Darwin’ sets will work towards completing 3 GCSEs in separate sciences (Biology, Chemistry, Physics) in Year 11
Personalised Learningin the Core In Science: • Other students will complete courses equivalent to at least 2 GCSEs in Science: • GCSE Science and GCSE Additional Science; or • GCSE Science and BTEC Science
Personalised Learningin the Core In Maths: • Top set will complete GCSE Maths at the end of Year 10, followed by ‘AO’ Maths in Year 11
Personalised Learning Subjects available outside the core: • Expressive Arts:Art; Art (3D Design); Drama; Music • Humanities:Geography; History • Languages:French; German; Spanish; Latin (if course started in Y8)
Personalised Learning Subjects available outside the core (Technology): • BTEC Catering & Hospitality • Engineering • Food Science • Graphics • Resistant Materials • Textiles
Personalised Learning Subjects available outside the core: • Computing:CiDA; Computer Science • Physical Education:PE; Dance • Vocational: Business; Applied Health & Social Care
Personalised Learning Additional opportunities for applied learning in Years 10 and 11 • Small Animal Care/Horticulture • Construction • Hair & Beauty Taster lessons in Year 9
Personalised Learning Personalised Learning is offered as a choice of 4 ‘Learning Pathways’, each worth the equivalent of at least 4 GCSEs and taught in 20 periods of time. Students choose from: • Pathway 1 = 1 GCSE from each of Expressive Arts, Humanities, Languages and Technology
Personalised Learning Personalised Learning is offered as a choice of 4 ‘Learning Pathways’, each worth the equivalent of at least 4 GCSEs and taught in 20 periods of time. Students choose from: • Pathway 2 = 2 Expressive Arts or 2 Humanities or 2 Languages (including Latin) or 2 Technologies (where allowed), plus 2 from two areas not chosen as specialism
Personalised Learning Personalised Learning is presented as a choice of 4 ‘learning pathways’, each worth the equivalent of at least 4 GCSEs and taught in 20 periods of time. Students choose from: • Pathway 3 = 1 from Business or Dance or Health & Social Care or CiDA or Computing or PE, plus 3 from Expressive Arts, Humanities, Languages or Technology (one from each of three Areas is encouraged but two from one Area might be possible)

The English Baccalaureate • At present is a performance measure not a qualification • Students must achieve A*-C passes in Maths, English Language, Science (Computer Science), History or Geography, and a Language • Uncertainty about attitude of (top) universities See briefing sheet for more information
Personalised Learning In several subjects students can follow: • A two year GCSE course in Years 9 and 10, or • A three year GCSE programme offering additional support and enrichment With an appropriate balance between 2 and 3 year courses reflecting individual capability, motivation and interests
Year 11 Enrichment Students who complete GCSEs in Y10 may: • Start an AS level course • Study additional GCSEs • Follow a GCSE to AS ‘bridging’ course eg Art, Languages, Humanities • Study a genuine enrichment course eg Young Enterprise, Sports Leader Award, National Theatre Drama
Personalised Learning • Students examined when ready • Examination load spread over five years • Three year courses offer opportunities for additional support and enrichment • Enrichment and extension for students who complete any GCSEs in Year 10 • Opportunities for greater breadth eg additional ‘AS’ courses

Guidance All students understand how their choices … • …fit into a balanced and coherent personalised curriculum • …have consequences for future study and career • …are based on accurate information on progress and motivation …should be based on their own personal strengths rather than those of their friends or the desire to have their current teacher.
Key Dates • Y8 Curriculum Evening: 21st January • Specific individual queries about student progress will be available by progress checks and at Parents’ Evening . Additional queries should go though contact with the form tutor/ subject teacher. • Further support is offered by Nwills@swchs.net • An appointment can be made with Mrs Revell for specific career information. Year 8 options assembly: 4th February (Options Booklet issued) • Year 8 progress check: Feb. 2014 • Issue of subject recommendations/options form: w/c 3rd March • Year 8S Parents Evening: 13th March • Year 8W Parents Evening: 19th March • Senior staff will be available for further queries on options during those evenings • Option forms submitted: 31st March
Y8 progress check January 2014
Target Level: This is the level that students should aim for at the end of year 8 as it would represent good progress during key stage 3. Forecast Grade: In the progress check that will be released next week teachers will forecast the level that they believe will be achieved at the end of the year if the current rate of progress is maintained.
