  2. Domestic and Family Violence: • Devastates individuals, families and communities at enormous social, economic and health cost • Affects 1 in 5 women and is associated with more than half of the child abuse reports in the Tweed Shire • Is never acceptable and cannot be tolerated.

  3. Domestic and Family Violence: • It is estimated that the cost of domestic and family violence is $8.1 billion per annum to the Australian economy. (The Cost of Domestic Violence to the Australian Economy. Access Economics, 2004.)

Project Background • Tweed Valley Committee Against Domestic Violence (TVCADV )has been proactive in the Tweed Valley for over 15 Years. • 5 Community Forums held since August 2004 indicated the need and willingness of services to develop an integrated response to domestic and family violence • A working party was established in 2006 to work towards an integrated response in the Tweed Shire

  6. Project Background • April 2007 Tweed Shire Women’s Service (TSWS) receives small grant from NSW Justice Department – Project Worker Position commences • TSWS prioritises IR Project and allocates additional resources to employ a project worker 8 hrs pw until June 2008

  7. Project Achievments • December 2006 - Working party established • April 2007 - research best practice IR models (national and international) • May 2007 - project aims and background paper developed • June 2007 - Key stakeholders forum and IR Project Committee formed

  8. Project Achievments • July 2007- Monthly project committee meetings commence with senior managers of key agencies • April 2008 - Statement of Commitment was agreed to and signed by ten (10) senior managers of agencies providing services in Tweed Shire. (Project partners)

  9. Community and Government Agencies across the Tweed Shire are Committed to addressing the problem in our community. Project partners include: • NSW Department of Community Service • ACON • Centrelink • Tweed Local Court • NSW Police Force – Tweed Byron LAC • Northern Rivers Women’s Domestic Violence Court Advocacy Service • NSW Dept of Probation and Parole • The Family Centre • Tweed Shire Council • Tweed Shire Women’s Service • Family Relationship Centre (Lismore)

  10. Project Achievments • June 2008 – Community Development Support Expenditure (CDSE) application was successful. • June- September 2008 Strategic Planning Process undertaken and planning documents developed. • November 2008 – Community Consultation Forum planned and held

  11. Our Committee Purpose • Support regional coordination across & between government & community sectors • Facilitate community partnerships to address domestic and family violence • Deliver training and develop resource kits • Set strategic directions

Our Committee Purpose • Identify funding opportunities to enhance service delivery • Collect, monitor and evaluate current research, practice, emerging themes and approaches • Identify and monitor the development of government policy regarding domestic and family violence • Provide advice to government

Our Goals • To prioritise the safety of victims of domestic and family violence and their children. • To hold perpetrators of domestic and family violence accountable for their behaviour. • To reduce secondary victimisation and co-ordinate service system responses to domestic and family violence. • To enhance and promote the development of violence prevention strategies

  16. Our Clients Families and individuals who are or may be affected by domestic and family violence and service providers who work with them

  17. Evaluation • Evaluation is an essential component of any project. • The TSIRDV&FVP committee has engaged Hanna Thomas to design the project evaluation
