PEISISTRATUS • Seized power in 560 B.C.E. • Loaned money to poor people • Gave jobs building temples and in public works • Won the support of the poor by dividing large estates among landless farmers
CLEISTHENES • Took power in 508 B.C.E. • Members had new powers • Debate matters openly • Hear court cases • Appoint army generals • Reorganized the assembly to play central role in governing
Cleisthenes… • Created a new council of 500 citizens to help the assembly carry out daily business • Council proposed laws, dealt with foreign countries and oversaw the treasury • Council members chosen each year by lottery • Believed to be more fair than election, which might favor the rich • Credited with making Athens a democracy
THEMISTOCLES • Born in 524 B.C.E. • An Athenian general and politician • In 483 B.C.E. he had the Assembly build triremes (wooden battleships) to strengthening the Athenian Navy. • Devised a plan to fight Persians And his trickery worked at Salamis ending in victory.
PERICLES • Lived circa 495 – 429 B.C.E. • Born wealthy and educated by philosophers • Strongly supported democracy • Citizenship should be for ALL • Took power from the few and gave it to the many
