  1. Advocacy Day 2014:What you need to know! Presented by: Anna Burnham, Project Coordinator, Child and Adolescent Health Initiative

EverThrive Illinoisformerly Illinois Maternal and Child Health Coalition EverThrive Illinois works to improve the health of women, children, and families over the lifespan through community engagement, partnerships, policy analysis, education, and advocacy. www.ilmaternal.org Advocacy Day Advocacy Day is an event run annually by EverThrive Illinois. It is an opportunity to bring youth from around the state to talk with their legislators about adolescent health and how they can improve adolescent health.

  3. What are we advocating for? • Maintain funding for School Health • Centers in the budget • Food Access It is still early in the game. If something comes up in the legislation before Advocacy Day that is relevant, we will include it. Any ideas of your own?

  4. Spoiler Alert: The state is broke • We know the state is in a dire financial situation • Redirect focus on saving money down the line • We are talking about investments

In Summary • Our Asks: • “Will you support maintaining funding and support for School Health Centers?” • “Will you support__________” • Engaging grocery store companies to address food deserts in our communities? • Providing incentives for schools to improve school lunches? • Nutrition education in schools? • This will become more developed with time but please feel free to reach out to me with any ideas!

Getting Ready for Advocacy Day! • Contact respective schools for permission to participate • Recruit students or explain to students about the event (check out our Advocacy Day Trainings and maybe try one out!) • Report tentative numbers to me by February 28, 2014 • Schedule a training with me. If I can get to you I will (March) • Final numbers due to me by March 11 • Permission slips due to me by March 25 • Advocacy Day- Tuesday, April 1, 2014

  7. What do Team Leaders and Bus Captains do? • The Team Leader • recruits students • collects consent forms • organizes an Advocacy training with students from his/her school in partnership with Anna • travels to Advocacy Day with students • leads students to legislators during Advocacy Day • The Bus Captain • serves as main authority figure on the bus • works with ICSHC to develop final bus schedule • doles out food • notifies Anna as the bus is leaving for Springfield • preps students for Advocacy Day on the bus • maintains attendance sheets • collects evaluations at the end of the day

  8. Tentative Day of Agenda 5:30-6:00am Leave respective locations, Drive to Springfield 10:00 –noon Welcome, Lunch and Advocacy Day Trainings   12:00 – 2:30pm Legislative Visits  2:00 – 3:00pm Rally at Capitol Rotunda 3:00pm Load Buses, head home!

Food and Transit Logistics • If you are not in Chicago • Depending on the number of students you are bringing, we will get you a van or bus • If you are within an hour of another group you should plan to take a bus with them (Anna will contact you as details are finalized) • If you are in Chicago: • A charter bus will be at your school to pick up students between 5:30-6:30am (each charter bus will have students from several schools, so there will be several pick ups and drop offs) • You should plan to get back to your school between 7-8pm • Anna will be in contact with you as the bus schedule is finalized

  10. Legislative Meetings • Contact your Senator and Representative at least 2 weeks before Advocacy Day. • You can find their phone number at www.ilga.gov. You can even have a student call! NEED HELP WITH THIS? CONTACT ANNA • Inform their offices that you will be bringing a group of students from their district and if they have time during the day, you would like to set up a meeting with them. • Try to set something up in the afternoon after 12:00 if possible.

  11. Media Advocacy Day is a great opportunity to generate media attention! EverThrive Illinois will send a mass media advisory, but local media will be more likely to cover this event if you contact them yourself Let me know if you plan to reach out so we can coordinate!

  13. Things to cover in trainings: • Introductions and Ice breakers • Advocacy: What is it? • Why do we have advocacy day? • Why is adolescent health important? • Finding your legislators • How to talk with legislators • Legislative role plays • Advocacy Day logistics

  14. Students Need: • Consent forms • Comfortable shoes • Professional clothing • Permission from school • Pocket money (optional) • Understand pick-up/drop off *Disciplinary Actions
