Function and importance of the Endocrine System • The endocrine system consists of numerous glands that all have the same objective.
Different glands Hypothalamus Thymus
Location • The hypothalamus gland is located just above the brain. • The thymus gland is located in the upper part of the chest.
Role and function Thymus • Function: transforms lymphocytes. • Role of thymus: improves a child's immune system. Hypothalamus • Function of the hypothalamus: Sends out nerve signals to various muscles • Role of thymus: Maintain homeostasis.
Hormones The glands are responsible for making: Thymuses Thyrotrophic Gonadotropin Growth Hormone Corticotrophin Somatostatin
Hormone functions Part1 • Thymosins: stimulates antibody production. • Thyrotropin: stimulates and regulates activity. • Dopamine: releases chemicals
Hormone Functions Part2 • Gonadotropin: stimulates the production • Growth hormone: chemical substance
Hormone Functions Part3 • Corticotropin: peptide hormone and neurotransmitter. • Somatostatin: release of somatotropin by the pituitary gland.
Diseases caused by Thymus • Thymoma: a tumor from the epithelial cells of the thymus. • Thymic carcinomas: disease in which malignant (cancer) cells will form outside on the surface on the thymus.
2 Diseases by Hypothalamus • Adrenal Insufficiency: occurs when the hypothalamus or pituitary gland doesn’t make adequate amounts of the hormones. • Hyperparathyroidism: The disease causes the parathyroid glands to lose its control mechanism.
Interesting facts • The hypothalamus gland is an important center in the brain • Mass of tissue located in the neck, chest and also in most vertebrate animals.
