  3. Conditions: • Czar Nicholas II & Czarina Alexandra • Absolute monarchy • Naïve to dissatisfaction in society

  4. Results: • Politically unstable • People unhappy & wanted change • Peasants wanted land; workers wanted better conditions • Lost war to Japan (1904)

  5. The 1905 Revolution

  6. Conditions: • On Bloody Sunday, the Czar’s police killed hundreds of workers marching peacefully

  7. Results: • Revolts & strikes spread throughout Russia • Radicals organized worker’s councils (soviets) • Czar gives democratic powers (creates the Duma), then takes powers back

  9. Conditions: • Russia honors alliances & joins WWI • Czar Nicholas II takes personal command of the army

  10. Army suffers many losses • Strange monk, Rasputin, gains power with Czarina

  12. Results: • Discontent of soldiers, peasants, & workers • Russia suffers greatly from WWI

  13. The March Revolution 1917 CZAR

  14. Conditions: • Protest for bread & peace turns into a revolt • Representatives of workers, peasants, & soldiers lead the revolution • Duma forms the Provisional Government

  15. Results: • Czar Nicholas II abdicates • Kerensky leads the Provisional Government

  16. Lenin & the November Revolution 1917

  17. Conditions: • Lenin, a Marxist revolutionary, Bolshevik leader, sneaks back into Russia • Lenin protests against the Prov. Gov.: calls for “peace, land, & bread” • Prov. Gov. continues to fight in WWI

  18. Results: • Nov. Revolution begins as Bolsheviks seize control of the government • Lenin proclaims socialist state, nationalizes all land

  19. ( November Revolution results continued) • Civil War between “Reds” (Bolsheviks) & “Whites” (anti-communist) • Treaty of Brest-Litovsk with Germany drops Russia out of WWI

  21. Conditions: • Russia devastated after WWI & Civil War • Western nations blockaded Russia • Lenin concerned new gov’t would fail

  22. Results: • Lenin created “New Economic Policy” (step back from communism) • NEP helped improve economy w/ small-scale capitalism
